New techniques for air monitoring in Texas

by marusia

Researchers from Texas A&M University have demonstrated the effectiveness of high-resolution mass spectrometry to identify air pollutants after disasters.

Their study, published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology, focused on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected after a fire at the My Way plastic recycling plant in Richmond, Indiana, in April 2023.

The fire prompted the evacuation of nearby residents. Using advanced mass spectrometry and untargeted analysis, the team quickly identified 46 VOCs, several of which were categorized as high or very high hazard. This method, supported by the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, allows for rapid and accurate data collection, helping to identify optimal evacuation zones and improve public safety, the scientists write.
