A shootout between a drug cartel member and the United States Border Patrol occurred on the border between the United States and Mexico. This was reported on January 28 by The New York Post (NYP).
It is noted that the alleged drug cartel member opened fire on the border patrol while the illegal migrants were attempting to swim across the river into the United States.
According to the newspaper, the patrol service prevented an attempt to penetrate the border. It is also indicated that no one was injured in the shooting.
The US Customs and Border Protection Service has received instructions from the administration of President Donald Trump to increase the number of people detained for violating immigration laws from several hundred per day to at least 1,200-1,500 per day.
Before this, on January 24, the media learned about US plans to send thousands of troops to protect the border with Mexico. There are currently about 2,200 troops on the border as part of Task Force North in El Paso, Texas.
